An experience not to be missed

The Walrus Cruise is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the challenge of life on the water... and to experience the fun of crewing a 30ft yacht, sailing, cooking, eating and sleeping on board. It also provides a great opportunity to discover more about the Christian faith both for Christians and non-Christians alike.

The day‘s sailing is planned each morning so that we can take full advantage of the wind and tide. Having chosen our destination for the day, each yacht then has the freedom to decide whether to race against other yachts, or to be a bit more laid back and enjoy the sights along the riverbanks whilst letting the wind do the work.

Situated in scenic Norfolk

We explore the rivers and broads (lakes) in the area bounded by Barton, Acle and Horsey. There is a lot to see and do - and it is best viewed from a yacht!  Time and winds permitting, we usually take the chance to climb Ranworth tower to scan the whole Broads, walk to the sea for fun and games on the beach and swim with the seals in the surf.

Safe in our hands

Each yacht is skippered by a leader with an Royal Yachting Association (RYA) sailing certificate and there is an overall ratio of about over one leader for every two crew. The Commodore has an instructor‘s certificate, is a qualified First Aider and has over 20 years of experience of sailing on the Broads.

Everyone wears buoyancy aids or life jackets when sailing in either the yachts or dinghies.  We are covered by full public liability insurance.

The Walrus Cruise holds an Adventure Activities Licensing Authority License (L2179) for operating watersports activities, specifically "Cruising under sail on the Norfolk Broads".

At a cost you can afford

The Walrus Cruise is a registered charity and all the leaders are unpaid volunteers.  Some supporters of the charity are also able to give financially which means that we can keep the crew fees very low compared with commercial organisations.

A relaxed and friendly atmosphere

Working as a team on each of the yachts quickly encourages strong friendships to develop and newcomers fit in remarkably quickly. Indeed, the satisfaction of learning how to make the most of the weather conditions to get to the evening mooring is just one element that creates the unique atmosphere of the cruise. Evening discussions in the relaxed confines of the yachts give the opportunity for each individual to find out more about the Christian faith.

A chance to learn to sail

The Walrus Cruise is a RYA Training Centre and offers a great chance to learn to sail and to improve existing skills.  There are a number of qualified instructors on the cruise who are able to teach sailing skills and award RYA certificates level 1 and 2.

Who can come?

The cruise is open to young people aged 13 - 18.  No prior sailing experience is necessary but crew do need to be able to swim 50 metres.
